Coat: Smooth

How often should a Staffordshire Bull Terrier be groomed?

Staffordshire Bull Terriers have short, smooth coats that shed lightly to moderately. Their coat is easy to care for but still needs regular attention to stay healthy and shiny. Brush your Staffy once a week using a rubber curry or bristle brush to remove loose hair and dirt. Bathe them every 4 to 8 weeks, but don’t overdo it — too much bathing can dry out their skin. Check and clean their ears monthly to prevent buildup and trim nails every 2 to 4 weeks to keep paws comfortable. - Brush weekly with rubber curry or bristle brush - Bathe every 4–8 weeks - Trim nails every 2–4 weeks - Clean ears monthly - Pro tidy as needed Their coat colors range widely, from solid black or blue to mixed patterns with white. White patches may show dirt more easily, so spot-clean those areas if needed. Pro tip: Use a damp cloth to wipe down white fur between baths to keep it looking fresh without over-bathing.

About the Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Staffordshire Bull Terrier, illustration, smooth coat, in black, black & tan

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or Staffy, is a compact, muscular dog with a short, smooth coat that comes in many colors like brindle, blue, red, and various white combinations. They weigh between 24 and 38 pounds, packing a lot of strength into a medium-sized frame. Originally bred in 19th-century England for bull-baiting, their role shifted after that cruel sport ended. Today’s Staffies are bred for companionship and show, prized for their courage and toughness but also their warmth and affection. Staffies are known for their fierce loyalty and love of people, especially kids, earning them the nickname “nanny dog.” They can be stubborn and need firm, consistent training. Socializing them early helps them get along with other dogs. Despite their tough look, they’re often big cuddlers and thrive on close family bonds.
